Found an interesting article about a purported myth that may have some truth to it. Evidently, the Germans built a field of wooden aircraft decoys. The USAF and RAF discovered this and dropped wooden bombs on it.

They did the same thing with tanks as well.

I was lucky enough to work on the movie "Battle of Britain" and we built 'dummy' fields of aircraft for that.
Talking to the film advisers they said how much work was built into 'Dummy' fields all over the UK during the war.
And, it worked! Many bombers dropped on what they thought were the real thing. Cunning Bastards these Brits.
Just so you know I was born in the UK and came to the US in 1980 and I'm still here - not sure why, but I'm loving it!!!
