OK hopefully he will find this funny...it was the only clip I recorded all night, and it was just a beautiful fireball.

Nice but I think he was done with the first burst.

Sometimes it is absolutely necessary to kill a fly with a sledgehammer.

Well...me and a buddy have been debating that one this morning. His answer was after the first burst, he would have rolled over and dove. And I agree...that might have allowed him to live a bit longer...but here is how I saw the short engagement.

I approached him from a 10:00 position to him, and lower. He was busy watching the ground and either looking for a strafing target, or watching for AAA that was coming at him. He turned slightly toward me and I thought he might have seen me...but in retrospect my wings were level against him - he probably never saw me against the backdrop of the town. I was ruddering toward him instead of rolling toward him...it kept my profile lower.

As he straightened out and slowly started to climb, I pulled in beneath and behind him - right in a Ki-61's blind spot. If he did not see me in the high turn he had made...he would never see me now. Since he did not begin to evade, my assessment was that he was blind to me.

The first shot killed his wings. They didn't come off, but when the game says "filled full of holes" - your lift pretty much sucks dirt and is gone. I also hit him with the first burst right about the Apex of his climb...so he had no E at all to go defensive. The absolute best he could have done is what my buddy said...rolled over and dove for the dirt. However that opens two more endings.

1) He would not have the lift to pull out of a steep rolling dive, and would have lawn darted.
2) He would have to pull out shallow...at which point I would not have followed him down...he had enough of an oil streak that I could easily stay up, keep my E - and watch his movements until I had a prime entry.

Anything he would have done would have been fatal at that point. The fact that he had about 2 seconds to decide AND act before being killed gave him a very short window to react. I started firing at 5 seconds...the rounds hit him and took his wing surfaces and oil lines at 8 seconds. At 10 seconds he exploded with my second short burst. Think about it...you are watching AAA and you see tracers and then oil explodes on your screen...by the time you process "MOVE" - you are exploded.

I've had it happen to me and I just cuss it out and move on. But Decker you are right - being "full of holes" means your wings are still on, but shot to hell (no lift), and couple that with heavy black smoke...that means his cockpit had oil burst in it. He lost a bunch of lift and his engine was destined to quit...so yep, I could have peeled off. But if HE could not make those mental decisions that quickly...neither could I :) I just saw a smoking bogey and decided to put a second burst in him! Didn't read the text until after the engagement.

And yes - I love analyzing stuff like this...

I forgot I could pop the view around...here is the enemy aircraft after the first burst. So yea - he is essentially done.
