Can someone break this down for me?

Unread post by leatherpuke »

O.k., so I am not a computer genius. My knowledge of computers consists of " push button, compoooootor come to life, make magic lights on screen." Get the idea?

I am seriously confused about all this HSFX, AAA installer, UP, patch, MODS....CRAP!!

I have heard people talking about having different installs for different versions of the game, but I'll be damned if I know what the hell that means or how to do it. Every time I try to download something new, something else gets screwed up and I have to start over.

So, for those of us who do not possess computer a engineering degree from MIT, how in the hell do you set this stuff up?

What does multiple installs really mean? And where do you install them? And how do you play one version or the other?

What is HSFX? Do I need it?

Do I need the AAA unified installers?

Basically, I am just thoroughly confused by all the different crap we need to fly in one server or the other. I don't know how to install all this garbage and every time I try I screw something up. Now it's getting to the point that several of us won't even be able to participate in FS, SEOW, or anything else.

SO can somebody PLEASE, for the love of God, break this down to like kindergarten level so maybe I can actually understand what the hell I'm suppose to have?

Sorry if this sounds like a bitch fit, but I am completely at my wits end here and I would really like to be able to fly with you guys.

The basic game in most servers is 4.08m. This can have the AAA 1.1.1 or the AAA 1.2 mod which, although the mods are 4.09, they include a switcher to revert to plain 4.08m

None of the events we participate in use basic 4.09m. . they all require a mod of some sort that they keep on #$%^ with (sounds like MS and XP/Vista). So two weeks ago we had to have UP1.8 to run FS. . now we need UP2. . however most seem to be having problems with it. SEOW required HSFX 4 and have now moved to HSFX 4.1

In theory UP2 contains HSFX, so when they get it fixed we should be able to just have a plain 4.08m to fly in open servers and then the UP2 to fly in events. Soon SOV will be moving to 4.09 and one of the patches . right now they are talking about using HSFX. . at which time perhaps the long discussed combination between HSFX and UP guys will have come about and there will be just one 4.09 patch required.

Myself, I presently have four installs

plain 4.08m to patch up from if I screw things up
AAA 1.1.1 4.08/4.9 switcher for open servers
HSFX 4.1 have yet to use it, although I am signed up for SEOW now
UP1.8 will patch this to UP2 when it is less buggy

So, do you have 4 different IL2 icons on your desktop, each going to a seperate install?

AAA (allaircraftarcade.com) released a MOD called the Engine Sound MOD a while back and then they developed a number of other MODS for all sorts of things. They put it all in what they called the AAA Unified Installer. The AAA Unified Installer was for 4.08m only and it came in several versions; AAA Unified Installer 1.0, AAA Unified Installer 1.1, AAA Unified Installer 1.1.1, & AAA Unified Installer 1.2. The wonderful thing about the AAA MODS was that it had security (checkRuntime=2) so that everyone would see the same thing as they all had the same MODS or they couldn't access the server. Currently, the only public server that I know of that uses the AAA Unified Installer is Skies of Valor and they are using AAA Unified Installer 1.2.

Multiple installations means that you have several instances of the game installed on your machine. This is the way that I do it as I have plenty of harddrive space and I never mess with an installation once I get it set up. I have one for HSFX, and one for Forgotten Skies, and one for the new Ultr@ Pack 2.0 (UP 2.0). What I did was do a clean installation of IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 version 4.09m, and then I copy it to create the multiple installations. So, in my Ubisoft Folder I have the following;

Ubisoft > IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 (stock 4.09m installation)
Ubisoft > FS > IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 (Forgotten Skies Installation)
Ubisoft > HSFX > IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 (History SFX Installation)

For example, when I created the copy that I use for Forgotten Skies, I simply created a folder called "FS" in my Unisoft folder and then copied the IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 folder into it. Then I installed the Ultr@ Pack 2.0 and the additional Forgotten Skies MODS into the copy of the game in the "FS" folder. I launched the JSGME program from inside this folder and selected all the MODS I needed for Forgotten Skies and then left it alone. Now, the beauty of installing my stuff in this manner is that when I want to use HyperLobby I just edit the game path by disconnecting, and pressing SHIFT+CTRL when I click on "Connect". Then, I just edit the path "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Stumovik 1946\il2fb.exe" by adding "FS" like this; "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\FS\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\il2fb.exe". For HSFX I just edit it to read "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\HSFX\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\il2fb.exe". And, you can create a shortcut on your desktop for each installation if you like.
=AVG=leatherpuke wrote: What is HSFX? Do I need it?
HSFX is the History SFX MOD and it was created primarily for Coop players. By contrast, Ultr@ Pack 1.8 was the same thing only for online dogfight servers. HSFX 4.1 (the latest version) is included in the Ultr@ Pack 2.0. In fact, it was developed by the same folks, so many knew it would only be a matter of time before they combined them. So, once you get your installation of Ultr@ Pack 2.0 working you shouldn't need HSFX 4.1.

Only if you want to fly Skies of Valor, but it is my understanding that they too will upgrade soon. So, you may not want to spend the time.

Leatherpuke,

Yes, I have shortcuts in my startup menu for the three versions I play, as well as two JSGME icons for HSFX and one for UP18

IL2 - UP18
IL2 - HSFX
IL2 - AAA
JSGME - HSFX
JSGME - UP18
