They want to create a game that many people can play, so according to the interviews and forums, they locked and omitted alot of resource hog eye candy and effects. That being said the engine and game is capable of more and over the years will be unlocked by modders and addons. Its a good strategy for a title that wants to be around for another decade or so.
I'm looking forward to it, but I think for the most part its just IL2 supped up with no real innovation added to it. Still a supped up IL2 is definitely on my must have list.
