Server performance issues

Unread post by Angels_Bard »

Yesterday while flying myself and many others were kicked during combat multiple times. Warping was excessive. This really makes being part of this event wasted time.

While I appreciate the effort you guys have put into this I am starting to suspect that the server box simply does not have a stable enough connection or enough stable upstream bandwidth to deal with the number of players on it.

Is the server at a data centre or is it hosted in someone's home? The reason I ask is that if it's at a data centre these issues should be easily fixed.

Cheers.

S!~ Sir,

The box is indeed hosted at a business and not someone's home. I believe I need to turn off the skin downloads to help with some of the lag issues.

Since skins are trickled with 'left over' bandwidth as determined by server rate settings skin downloads won't cause issues unless the combination of server rate x number of users exceeds the available bandwidth.

Any idea on the upstream bandwidth of this business connection (since they go from anything from SDSL to fibre)?

What's the current server rate set at?

We should be able to determine peak capacity with both those bits of info and whether it'll be necessary to fiddle with the server rate settings as well.

The bandwidth would be 1.5 Mbps (up & down). However, I don't think the bandwidth is the issue. The antiquated "pizza box", which we have cleverly hidden among actual business computers, runs at a blistering 900 Mgz. It has always run the Dedicated IL-2 server software, with one minor problem; the CPU clock accelerates, and the more players that join, the faster it goes. However, we have never noticed anything in the server while playing, aside from the occasional errors in reporting the time remaining.
