Contents
The i386 folder contains a copy of all the installation files for Microsoft Windows. These files are required when new features are installed or modified. These files can also be used to repair system files that become damaged.

Installation
If your PC does not have the i386 folder installed, you can create it by copying the folder from your Windows installation CD. Simply locate the i386 folder on the installation CD and copy the entire folder to the root of your C: drive.

Benefits
The i386 folder contains the same files as the Windows installation CD, but the reading and copying of files from the hard drive is much faster than from CD. Also, having another copy of the files on the hard drive is a good idea in case the CD is lost or damaged.

Expert Insight
Many users ask if the i386 folder can be deleted to free up hard-drive space. The folder can be deleted with no ill effects, but it does come in very handy during maintenance and repair of Windows. Unless you really need the space, leave the folder alone.

*** the above info was copied from quick search I did on the interweb.... I hold no responsibility if it blows up your pc *** :)
