Ireland had a rather different role in WWII, Their waters were considered neutral, a faction of the IRA was working with Germany in the hopes of pushing England out for good. The faction working with Germany rather screwed the pooch and the Germans stopped taking them seriously.
Another neutral worth reading up on is Switzerland. The treatment of airmen from either side was rather atrocious. They were dumped into lagers and left to fend for themselves.

I saw this a couple weeks ago. I thought it was very well done. Dont think either one of them would have survived the wing smashing but hey, it's a movie. I liked it.

I agree, the wing smash that close to the ground and both pilots survive a ditch, unharmed, is implausible. It was necessary to the plot, however to have them both survive. Overall, a good short film with decent CGI.
I was unaware of Ireland's stance toward both sides. Interesting facts.
