Wings~of~War: Ardennes 1944

Unread post by Tiger »

Wings~of~War is a continuous 24 hour, 7 day dynamic campaign for IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946, using the Dedicated IL-2 Server Software, Ultra Pack 2.01, FB Daemon II (FBD2), and Lowengrin's Dynamic Campaign Generator (DCG) 3.46. Wings~of~War campaigns are designed to be realistic in the extreme and are intended to create a very immersive combat experience. As such, there are virtually no rules. It is our intent to eliminate issues that are caused by the subjective nature of the various interpretations of a rule, such as vulching. And, that is why there is no rule against it. Please understand before you register that, if you are in the server during the campaign, you are a target.

Every attempt has been made to govern game play through the use of available software, such as FB Daemon II, which will restrict a player's ability to join the opposing side, and also enforces the 10 minute death penalty. Or, the Dynamic Campaign Generator (DCG), which manages the dynamic campaign. Even the IL-2 Dedicated Server software is set for checkRuntime=2 to ensure that everyone is playing the same game.

The server resets every two hours to keep the Wings~of~War generated mission objectives current and up to date. A two hour session equals one campaign day. The victory conditions and objectives for each mission are determined by the Dynamic Campaign Generator (DCG). The mission briefing will contain reports of conflicts in various areas of the map. You will need to fly in defense of your ground units as they will be attacked by enemy on the ground and in the air. Reports of the activity of the previous mission will be displayed within the mission briefing.

The Wings~of~War Server will go online at 00:01 Eastern on Saturday, 4 June 2011 and will go offline at 00:01 Eastern the following Saturday, 11 June 2011. Then, we will switch sides and fly the “Redoux” beginning at 00:01 Eastern on Saturday, 18 June 2011, and continuing until 00:01 Eastern the following Saturday, 25 June 2011.

Rules

1.) Each participant must be registered for the campaign (i.e. Berlin 1945, Marianas 1944).
2.) Any pilot found to be cheating (flying hacked, intentionally exiting the server in flight to avoid a death, etc.) will be banned from all future campaigns.

Scoring

Points are awarded depending upon what happens to the plane that you shoot at in each combat. Points are awarded differently based on what happens to the enemy aircraft that you targeted and whether it is destroyed in the air, is forced down, crash lands at a friendly base, or another aircraft intercepts it on its return journey to base. The last plane to shoot into the enemy aircraft will be awarded the kill points. If ground units also hit the target and no air hits were achieved the ground unit is regarded as the killing unit. If the targeted plane does not disintegrate but lands successfully the score is ignored. Pressing re-fly adds the points achieved in the last sortie to the score.

Scoring is based on the default values for targets in IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946. You must survive and return to base to get 100% of your score. If you are forced to land outside of the boundaries of an allied airbase you will be awarded 70% of your score. You will be awarded 50% of your score if you bail out over friendly territory. You will need to hit re-fly if you are captured or die in combat to receive 10% of your score.

Sit Out Times

The Wings~of~War Server is set up to govern itself meaning that the sit out times, aircraft ordnance load outs, etc., are handled by the Dynamic Campaign Generator (DCG) and FB Daemon II. If you bail out over friendly territory you can re-fly immediately. If you bail out over enemy lines you have a 1 in 10 chance of escape.

Death/Capture Penalty: 10 minutes (approximately)

S! Gents, The plane set needs a small adjustment. The Japanese need another fighter, the only thing that the A6M2 Rufe would be good for would be delivering pizza and beer between bases or extreme water skiing or kneeboarding. They need to another flavor of Zero, or perhaps the Ki 84b, which would have been available given the time frame.

re: Japanese fighter. It depends on whether they are using navy and/or army aircraft . . all the aircraft listed ingame are IJN, whereas anything with a Ki prefix is IJAAF

I would say keep it realistic. The Japs lost hundreds of aircraft and 3 aircraft carriers compared to very small loses for the Americans most of which were due to runnig out of fuel and inexperiance with night landings

Exactly, so what's the point of the whole thing.

The way I see it, there is no reason for any apprehension regarding the plane set. One of the biggest parts of this game is adjusting your strategy to the strengths of your aircraft.

That being said (and at the risk of contradicting myself), the only thing that I see in the plane set list that concerns me is the DCG upgrade for the F4U. Japanese aircraft are easy enough to kill with 50 cals, and putting the 20mm's in the F4U will simply devastate any G4M1 pilot in one pass. I would suggest making it the FU4-1D.

BUT regardless of what happens, I'm confident that both teams should be able to work around the limitations of their plane sets. And after all, both teams will have to fly both plane sets.

But someone could explain, how does the DCG aircraft upgrade/downgrade work? Is it simply a time based change, or does it have to do with in game actions?

It definitely has to do with in-game action. If you do well with a given aircraft it may be upgraded. And, if you lose too many it will be downgraded. It is not a time based change (although you could make time based changes as well).

As I have always heard it.... when you are handed lemons, make lemonade. I don't ever see any WWII map being dead even for both sides and I don't believe it was ever that way in real life either. Take what you are given and do the best you can with it. Remember we switch sides and fly again so we all have the same chances. That is just my $.02
